Dr. Ammar Ghanem, a pulmonologist with St. Joseph Medical Group in Fort Wayne, is from Zabadani, Syria, a once-popular resort city in a valley west of Damascus. A rebel stronghold taken back early this year by the Syrian Army, Zabadani was the scene of heavy fighting and is still being hit by the army even though it is now under the army's control. At the end of June, Ghanem made the second of two visits home to help care for those wounded and displaced by the rebellion against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad that has now dragged on for a year and a half.
